JOB LOCATION:  KVMH Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii 

FUNCTION:  This position is located in the Finance Department of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH and SMMH are part of the Kauai Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii operating nine (9) facilities statewide.

Kauai Region Finance Dept. provides a variety of fiscal services including bookkeeping, billing and collections, budgetary control, purchasing and inventory, and informs administration of financial condition. The Financial Dept. provides general accounting services, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory. The Finance Dept. also maintains financial data for budget preparation, implementation, and control.

The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the accurate and timely processing of the Accounting functions at all Kauai Region facilities including but not limited to: all aspects of all regional general accounting procedures, month-end closing, and reporting analytical review and cost accounting, accounts receivable, collections and payments, accounts payable, and payroll, and leave records, etc. This position requires completion of a large volume of work within a limited period of time. Position will be required to report to other facilities on a regular basis as determine by the Regional Fiscal Management Officer (RFMO) to perform all of Kauai Region Facilities accounting aspects. Position may be required to travel to and from other facilities within the Kauai Region.


Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with at least 12 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing subjects.

Experience: One-half (1/2) year of progressively responsible professional accounting or auditing experience which may have included teaching accounting at the university level.

Certification: None

Licensure: None

Desired Skills & Abilities: Computer skills are desirable since most duties are related to use of personal computer and word processing. Use of software including, but not limited to, Excel & Microsoft Word.

A thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of accounting and the ability to apply this knowledge to complex accounting problems; the ability to develop solutions to complex and unprecedented situations; and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Public fiscal administration, including budgeting and financial reporting, and State appropriation and budget account procedures, and have the ability to supervise clerical and accounting subordinates.

Knowledge of the construction of accounting systems and methods of installing them, and may need to have the ability to learn the principles and practices of supervision.

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.  QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: Possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position.
