TEMPORARY WITH BENEFITS POSITION
SALARY: $4,192./ Per Month (BU04/SR21)
JOB LOCATION: KVMH Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii
FUNCTION: This position is located in the Environmental Services Department of the Kauai Region. The Kauai Region, consists of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), and several satellite clinics of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii operating statewide. This position is regional and is required to travel between facilities on a regular basis.
The Environmental Services Superintendent I plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the environmental services operations for the Kauai Region; and performs other duties as required. Position requires travel on a regular basis to both facilities, including the clinics, within the Kauai Region.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduation from High School. College degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
Experience and Training: Three (3) years of general housekeeping/laundry experience of janitorial or related custodial work and/or commercial or institutional laundry experience of which one (1) year must have been in a health care setting.
Two (2) years of supervisory work experience which demonstrated the applicant’s knowledge of and ability to apply the principles, practices, techniques and methods of supervision including: (1) planning, organizing, and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing work; (3) advising others on difficult work problems; (4) timing and scheduling work; and (5) training and developing employees.
One (1) year of specialized experience in a health care setting is preferred, the working knowledge of effective inspection and maintenance methods of environmental services operations (e.g., direct the unit to be ready for inspection by the State of Department of Health, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and/or Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO); manage and inspect the cleanliness of the facility for the purpose of providing feedback to constantly improve the cleanliness and physical environment of the facility.
Knowledge of: Practices, tools and materials used in janitorial work; knowledge of basic practices in methods of infection control, housekeeping protocols and procedures, safety, handling and disposal of waste preferred.
Lift and carry heavy furniture and equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform minor building repair and maintenance tasks; and safely operate heavy industrial type cleaning equipment. Ability to reference Material Safety Data Sheet to safely work with departmental chemicals; use small hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, and wrenches to perform the daily duties that are assigned; work independently and complete all job assignments on a daily basis preferred.
Physical and Medical Requirements:
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Mental/Emotional Requirements: All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties and responsibilities and working conditions.
QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: Possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position. Overall paid or unpaid experience must have been of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of this position. MERIT OR CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM: You must meet the minimum qualification requirements, including education, experience, other public employment requirements for State Civil Service employment, and HHSC Standards of Fitness. CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. and at the time of appointment will be required to become a Hawaii resident within a reasonable time from hire.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be conditioned on the results of a complete physical examination, which includes a drug screening. For certain job categories, applicants may be referred to an HHSC-designated physician, rather than the applicant’s personal physician of choice. The cost for all physical examinations, except the cost for the drug screening, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. The Hawaii Health Systems Corporation shall bear the cost of the drug screening.
