JOB LOCATION:  Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii 

FUNCTION: This position is located in the Obstetrics/Nursery Unit of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital. Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital is located on the island of Kauai, serving as the Regional Center, which also includes Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. It is one of nine (9) facilities within the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

The Obstetrics/Nursery unit provides all phases of nursing care involving prenatal care, disorders of pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and care of the newborn and the mother.

The Per Diem Nurse coordinates nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with other staff and departments in maintaining standards of nursing care; follows established policies, procedures or specific instructions. In the event there are no patients in the unit, this position may be assigned to various units within the Nursing Services and may require cross training and floating as assigned.  Position is also subject to a combination of 12 and 8-hour shifts.



To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education Requirements:  Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Experience Requirement: Six (6) months of responsible professional nursing experience must have been in labor and delivery, antepartum and postpartum, and fetal monitoring.

Selective Certification Requirements: Applicants shall be restricted to those possessing the following:

Provide current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and STABLE (Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs and Emotional Support) within one (1) month of employment. Must possess prepared childbirth educator certification. As a Lactation Consultant must be certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

License Required:  License to practice as professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawaii RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.


KNOWLEDGE OF: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.

ABILITY TO: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees.
