JOB LOCATION:  Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION AND LOCATION: This position is located in the Human Resources department and services the hospital and all outpatient clinics for HHSC Kaua’i Region. Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and Kaua’i Region Clinics, which includes Clinic at Poipu, Clinic at Kalaheo, Specialty Clinic at Kalaheo, Clinic at Port Allen, Clinic at Waimea, and the Specialty Clinic at Kapa’a are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, is a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Clerk IV is responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical tasks in order to support the daily business operations of the Human Resources department. Their duties includes, but is not limited to: responds to phone calls, emails and relays messages within a timely manner; accurately processes, files, organizes and maintains confidential personnel records; processes criminal background checks; orders and restocks office supplies; and any other duties as assigned. Although this position is assigned to SMMH, the incumbent is subject to report to any facility location site within the region as deemed necessary. The Clerk IV reports directly to the Regional Chief Human Resources Officer (RCHRO), or its designee.

The position may frequently require intense work activity and the ability to handle many clerical processes at one time while prioritizing functions. Position must interface with administration, providers, staff, public and private agencies and the community. High level of confidentiality required.


To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

General Clerical Experience: Two (2) years of work experience which involved performance of a variety of clerical tasks which demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, common office appliances and equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, compare words and numbers quickly and accurately, operate various kinds of office equipment.

***Must demonstrate possession of supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exists by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Preferred Qualifications: One (1) year of computer skills.


Light physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs.) Occasional standing/walking
Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less. 
Must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
