JOB LOCATION:  Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION AND LOCATION: This position is located at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital of Kaua’i Region Healthcare Enterprises. The Kaua’i Region Healthcare Enterprises is a 501c3 tax exempt organization of which the HHSC –Kaua’i Region is its sole member. The HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and Kaua’i Region Clinics, which are part of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Maternity Education Coordinator works in the hospital and outpatient clinic and is responsible for providing childbirth and lactation education to new moms for the hospital and the community. Additionally, this position will assist in inpatient consults and OB nurse education on labor and delivery; organize and provide a prenatal education program on a regular basis; coordinate and administrate a new prenatal care program designed by the Centering Institute in order to offer group prenatal visits to enhance our pre-existing prenatal care to attract new patients; assist our providers in Women’s Health in managing high risk patient care, such as high risk OB, cancer and patients who require specialized care or medications; as well as any other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i.

Experience:

  • Possession of five (5) years of professional nursing experience. 
  • Must have minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience in maternal / child nursing, labor and delivery, antepartum and postpartum and fetal monitoring.

Certifications:

  • Provide current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and STABLE (Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs and Emotional Support) within one (1) month of employment. As a Lactation Consultant, must possess certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). Must also possess prepared childbirth educator certification with-in one (1) year of hire.
  • Must also possess prepared Childbirth Educator certification with-in one (1) year of hire.

KNOWLEDGE,  SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing; proficient knowledge of labor and delivery, antepartum and postpartum care including fetal monitoring.

Ability to:  Apply nursing theory and practice to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; establish and maintain good working relationships with hospital personnel and medical staff; direct the work of nursing assistants; influence others; work independently; attend events and meetings outside of normal work hours.

Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, The Joint Commission, procedures used in surveillance and control of hospital infections desired.

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Mental/Emotional Requirements: All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties and responsibilities and working conditions.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT

COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.  After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
