JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI
FUNCTION: This position is located in the Acute Behavioral Health Unit of the Nursing Services Section of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). SMMH, Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), and Kaua’i Region Clinics, are part of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.
The Acute Behavioral Health Unit at SMMH provides direct nursing treatment, social work, and ancillary health services to involuntary and voluntary patients with acute and/or chronic psychiatric and behavioral conditions.
The Registered Professional Nurse III (RPN III) provides nursing treatment and educational service for specific individualized age appropriate patient care of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population; develops and implements nursing care plans with other disciplines; determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system; communicates with the attending physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies; responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment and other duties as assigned. Although designated to Behavioral Health, this RPN will be subject to cross training and may be assigned to float to other departments within the facility as needed. In addition, this position is subject to rotating shifts and to provide work on the weekends and holidays.
This position reports and is under the general supervision of the RPN V: Unit Nurse Manager, or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Licensure: Valid and active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications must be presented upon appointment of hire.
Experience: Six (6) months of responsible professional nursing experience.
Select Certification: Of the six (6) months professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in Psychiatric/Behavioral Health or 6 months in an acute care setting
Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice, technique and procedures; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to the nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing hospital/institution nursing programs and current trends and procedures necessary for their implementation.
Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees. Must also have the ability to prepare comprehensive nursing diagnosis and nursing care plans; and plan and direct the work of lower level registered nurses and nursing assistants.
Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission, procedures used in surveillance and control of hospital infections.

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
