JOB LOCATION:  Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION:  This position is located in the Intensive/Critical Care Unit (ICU/CCU) of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii operating nine (9) facilities statewide.

The ICU/CCU provides services for patients requiring primarily surgical patients or patients with serious cardiac conditions requiring specialized services of coronary care.

The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III provides nursing treatment and educational service for specific individualized age appropriate patient care of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population; develops and implements nursing care plans with other disciplines; determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system; communicates with the attending physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies; responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment and other duties as assigned. Although designated to CCU, this RPN will be subject to cross training and may be assigned to float to other departments within the facility as needed (Labor & Deliver, Medical Surgical, Long Term Care, etc.). In addition, this position is subject to 12-and 8-hour rotating shifts and to provide work on the weekends and holidays.

The RPN III works under the general supervision of the Unit Nurse Manager, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: Valid, active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i.

Experience: Six (6) months of professional nursing experience.

Select Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in Acute Care, Intensive Care or Cardiac Care services.

Certifications: Current certifications from the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications must be provided upon appointment of hire.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.

Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees. Must also have the ability to prepare comprehensive nursing diagnosis and nursing care plans; and plan and direct the work of lower level registered nurses and nursing assistants.

Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission, procedures used in surveillance and control of hospital infections.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
