JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI
FUNCTION: This position is located in the Long Term Care (LTC) Unit at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). SMMH, Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), and Kaua’i Region Clinics, are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.
The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III: MDS Coordinator will be responsible to oversee, provide, and meet the individualized age appropriate nursing care needs of the adults and geriatric patient populations; conduct and coordinate the completion of resident assessment activities in accordance with governmental regulations and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital policies and procedures; and any other duties as assigned. This position is also subject to a combination of 12- and 8-hour shifts as well as providing work on weekends and holidays.
The RPN III: MDS Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Nursing – LTC, or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Graduation from a nursing program with a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
Licensure: License to practice as registered professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.
Experience: One-half year (1/2) of professional nursing experience. Previous or current MDS Coordinator experience preferred.
Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for the six (6) months of required experience.
Supervisory Aptitude: must have demonstration possession of supervisory aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
Certifications: Applicants are required to provide current certification from the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) at the time of appointment of hire.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIRED
Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; Joint Commission requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts.
Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees; plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision; initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
