JOB LOCATION: Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI
FUNCTION: This position is located in the Nursing Administration department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consists of: The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalaheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalaheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipu, and the Clinic at Kapa’a, are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.
The Nursing Administration department supervises the nursing care provided to a variety of patients including medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetrical, gynecological, cardiac care, intensive care, and long term care; as well as functions in close relationship with other services administratively and professionally.
The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) VI (House Supervisor) is responsible for managing the provision of nursing services and treatment services on an assigned shift-evening, night, or day-under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON). The Nursing Supervisor shall maintain approved standards of patient care in all nursing units, each of which is under the direction of a Head Nurse, ensuring the optimal care for patients addressing the individualized age appropriate care needs of patients/residents; including any other duties as assigned. This position is subject to rotating shifts, work on holidays and weekends, and may be floated to other units as needed. The House Supervisor reports to the ADON or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Licensure: License to practice as professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of valid license).
Experience: Two (2) years of professional nursing experience where scope and level of responsibility conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered. Such experience in hospital acute care units (i.e., Medical, Surgical, Pediatric, Obstetrical, Gynecological, Emergency, Cardiac Care, Intensive Care, etc.) preferred.
Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of nursing experience.
Supervisory Experience: One half (1/2) year of professional nursing experience which includes: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees.
Certifications: Current certification from the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing; Joint Commission requirements, and other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations.
Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees.
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
