JOB LOCATION: Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION: This position is located in the Surgery/Operating Room department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalaheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalaheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipu, and the Clinic at Kapa’a are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Surgery/Operating Room department provides nursing services for all surgical procedures; provides sterile and sanitary environment for the performance of surgical operations; provides proper control so that preoperative requisites of the hospital and Medical Staff are properly carried out; and ensures that necessary equipment, instruments and drugs are available to the surgeon.

The full performing Sterile Processing Tech provides support to the surgery crew and is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispended by the department following infection and control practices and ensures client satisfaction while also adhering to the highest quality and compliance standards. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays and call. The Sterile Processing Tech reports to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), or its designee.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Licensure: Current, valid driver’s license preferred.

Certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) is required within 12 months of employment for the entry level and is required at time of employment for the full performance level.

Experience: One (1) year of work experience in a sterile processing department where the primary or basic objective was to provide support to surgical services. Such experience must have provided knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; setting up instrument trays; applicable hospital/facility/program policies and procedures; and the ability to independently decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments and set up instrument trays; and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team. Must have knowledge of medical/surgical procedure and terminology and the ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively with others in English; listen to and follow oral and written instructions precisely; and get along well with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Sensory: Read handwritten or typewritten instrument tray listings: distinguish shapes, colors and shades of color of surgical instruments; hear the conversational voice.

Coordination/Dexterity: Manipulative skills to wrap/unwrap surgical instruments.

Strength/Stamina: Lift and carry instrument trays up to twenty-five (25) pounds; stand/walk for long periods of time.

Mobility: Transport patients; move around in cramped quarters; bend when stocking supplies.

Other: Work with a variety of cleaning chemicals; decontaminate objects containing blood and tissues.

Mental/Emotional Requirements: All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties and responsibilities and working conditions.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT

COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.  After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
