JOB LOCATION:  KVMH, Waimea & SMMH, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii 

FUNCTION:  This position is located in the Finance Department of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH and SMMH are part of the Kauai Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii operating nine (9) facilities statewide.

Kauai Region Finance Dept. provides a variety of fiscal services including bookkeeping, billing and collections, budgetary control, purchasing and inventory, and informs administration of financial condition. The Financial Dept. provides general accounting services, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory. The Finance Dept. also maintains financial data for budget preparation, implementation, and control.

The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the accurate and timely processing of the accounting functions for all Kauai Region facilities including but not limited to: all aspects of regional general accounting procedures, month and year-end closing, analytical and reporting reviews, cost accounting, cost reporting financial statement preparation, reconciliation and balancing of accounts receivable, collections and payments, inventory, fixed assets, accounts payable, and payroll. This position requires the processing of large volume transactions within a limited period of time. Position requires travel to/from Kauai Region facilities on a regular basis as determine by the Regional Fiscal Management Officer (RFMO) to perform all aspects of the accounting functions.

Position reports to the Regional Fiscal Management Officer.


Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with at least 12 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing subjects.

Experience: One and one-half (1 1/2) years of progressively responsible professional accounting or auditing experience which may have included teaching accounting at the university level.

Select Certification: Of the required four (4) year college degree, degree must be within the following: Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a closely related field. Of the required 1 and ½ years of professional accounting experience, such experience must also be in budgeting and related financial experience.

Certification: CPA preferred but not required.

Licensure: None

Desired Skills & Abilities:

Experience in asset accounting with skills in analyzing and interpreting data.

Experience in preparing complex, consolidated financial reports.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and advanced Excel skills (i.e. use/familiarity with pivot tables, vlookups, filters, complex functions, etc.)

Candidate must possess a solid understanding of accounting concepts, is detail-oriented, and demonstrates strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, as well as, excellent organizational and communication skills.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

A thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of accounting and the ability to apply this knowledge to complex accounting problems; the ability to develop solutions to complex and unprecedented situations; and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Public fiscal administration, including budgeting and financial reporting, and State appropriation and budget account procedures, and have the ability to supervise clerical and accounting subordinates.

Knowledge of the construction of accounting systems and methods of installing them, and may need to have the ability to learn the principles and practices of supervision.
