The Social Services unit provides social services to patients and/or family through individual or group conferences to assist in restoring patient’s optimum social and health adjustment by providing medical care and social and economic advice. Identifies, problem solves and makes referrals to other community agencies to meet the patient’s and family’s needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications.
Education: In accordance with the Department of Health Administrative Rules, Title 11, Chapter 93-33, graduation with a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in social work from a program of study accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, or a doctoral degree in social work from a college or university accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or a comparable regional accreditation body. Master’s degree from a social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education is preferred.
Licensure:
- Current, valid license in clinic social work (LCSW) is preferred.
- Current, valid driver’s licensed is preferred.
Certification: None required.
Specialized Experience: Progressively responsible professional work experience which involved helping individuals and their families find satisfactory ways of identifying their problems, coping with their conditions, and functioning effectively within their environments. Depending on the employment setting and the kinds of clients or patients served, job duties and responsibilities may vary, although typically the work will include the identification and evaluation of the client’s or patient’s problems and needs; the development of a service or treatment plan, sometimes in tandem with other professionals working in an interdisciplinary team; the initiation and implementation of the service plan, either directly or through the authorization of provider/vendor services; monitoring of services being provided; and evaluation/assessment of the client’s or patient’s progress, with amendments to the service/treatment plan made as appropriate:
- For applicants who possess a Bachelor of Social Work degree, two (2) years of the aforementioned Specialized Experience is required.
- For applicants who possess a Master of Social Work degree, one (1) year of Specialized Experience is required.
- For applicants who possess a Ph.D. degree in Social Work, no Specialized Experience is required.
DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of: the philosophy, theory, practice and techniques of professional social work and community mental health; personality theory, psychiatric disorders (psychopathology), various treatment modalities such as individual and group therapy, psychopharmacology, milieu therapy, therapeutic community; principles and practices of interviewing and effectively communicating with those from other systems and cultural backgrounds; socioeconomic problems of the community as they relate to consumers to the psychiatric services; the laws, rules and regulations as they impact on the consumers of psychiatric services, and the working of the legal system with which the mental health interfaces; the organizational structure and its basic policies as well as knowledge of the community mental health system and other available community resources and their effective utilization.
Ability to: obtain and evaluate social history and other information and to be able to arrive at sound individual and family assessments; formulate appropriate treatment plans and goals based upon the assessment, and skill in carrying out the treatment plans; work effectively with others, particularly with members of the multi-disciplinary team; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; maintain an objective and emotionally stable attitude; learn and apply the principles and practices of supervision. Willingness to accept and carry out special assignments and additional duties when requested.
