POSITION TITLE: KAUA’I REGION PSYCHIATRIST

STATUS:  Exempt | Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

SALARY: Negotiable

LOCATION: This position is located in the Behavioral Health/Psychiatric Acute department at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region. SMMH, along with Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consists of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a, are all part of a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Acute Behavioral Health Unit at SMMH provides direct nursing treatment, social work, and ancillary health services to involuntary and voluntary patients with acute and/or chronic psychiatric and behavioral conditions.

We are in search of a highly clinically skilled and compassionate Psychiatrist for our organization who will provide clinical leadership alongside the Director to ensure treatment is evidence-based and outcome driven. The Psychiatrist will be responsible to complete the initial risk assessment as well as conduct risk management and ongoing treatments, including crisis intervention for HHSC Kaua’i Region’s patients. The candidate must work collaboratively with the clinical staff to ensure services are delivered with the framework of clinic self-determination, recovery, and cultural competency; provide direct patient care to the Dual Diagnosis and Severely Disabled Mentally Ill (SDMI) populations in inpatient, intensive outpatient, and outpatient clinic programs. The Psychiatrist is an integral part of the clinical leadership of our multi-disciplinary team who will provide client-centered, culturally competent care with the highest standard of quality possible. This position reports to the Regional Chief Medical Officer (RCMO), position no, 109715, or its designee.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists patients by evaluating medical and psychosocial conditions.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of psychotropic medications.
  • Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
  • Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
  • Develops treatment plans by determining the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
  • Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discusses progress toward goals with patients; provides instructions; monitors the effect of medications, and supervises staff provision of services.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
  • Assures quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures, standards, rules, Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations requirements, and legal regulations; participating in utilization reviews; and remaining available for emergency consultations.
  • Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
  • Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy with a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree and completion of a psychiatric residency program accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association.

Licensure:

  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Hawai’i. The physician shall be duly licensed and qualified as a doctor of medicine or osteopathy to practice medicine in the State and shall be approved for Active Staff membership and clinical privileges on the Medical Staff of the Hospital in accordance with the Hospital’s Medical Staff bylaws and Rules and Regulations.  The physician shall also be approved for, and maintain throughout the term of this Agreement, Active Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges at the Hospital.  The physician is further required to maintain membership in good standing in Kaua’i Medical Associates, an independent physician association. 
  • Current registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and a current State Controlled Substance license from the State of Hawai’i Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Narcotics Enforcement Division (NED).

Certifications: 

  • Current, valid board certification in Psychiatry.
  • Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association for Healthcare Workers in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). 

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with current DSM criteria.
  • Familiar with crisis assessment tools and techniques.
  • Strong working knowledge of general psychiatric principles and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Completion of continuing education in practicing rural medicine.
  • Excellent bedside manner.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours and ability to stand for long periods of time and have limited periods of rest.
  • Travel to multiple sites within the region as required.
