LOCATIONS: These positions are located in the Nursing Services (Emergency Services, Long Term Care, Medical/Surgical, Obstetrics, etc.) departments of HHSC Kaua’i Region. Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, Urgent Care at Po’ipū, The Clinic at Līhu’e, and The Clinic at Kapa’a are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. JOB FUNCTIONS: The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III provides professional nursing care for patients; coordinates care with other disciplines; provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care; determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system; communicates with the attending physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies; responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. In addition, these positions are subject to cross-training and may be assigned to float and assist other departments within the facility as needed.

Candidates must be available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on hospital/clinic operation needs. Services are provided 24/7. Positions located in The Kaua’i Region Clinics are subject to travel to and from different clinic locations within Kaua’i Region as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. Also, please see below the additional requirements according to the specific department. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Graduation from a nursing program with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.

Licensure: Valid, active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of a valid license).

General Experience: Six (6) months of professional nursing experience.

Substitutions Allowed: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

General Certification: Current certification issued by the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers. See below for additional certification requirements based on the department. 

Selective Certification: Specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities may be required to perform the duties of some positions. In such positions, applicants may be restricted to those who possess the pertinent experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position. See below for more additional selective certification requirements based on the department. 

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.

Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff, and employees. Must also have the ability to prepare comprehensive nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans; plan and direct the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants.

Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission, and procedures used in the surveillance and control of hospital infections.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH / PSYCH

Select Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in Psychiatric/Behavioral Health and/or acute care.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association and certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). 


EMERGENCY SERVICES

Select Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in emergency services.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association is required. 

Applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association and NIH Stroke Scale.

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is highly recommended. 


INTENSIVE CARE / CRITICAL CARE UNIT

Select Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in Acute Care, Intensive Care, or Cardiac Care services.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association is required. 

Applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association and NIH Stroke Scale.

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is highly recommended. 


OBSTETRICS / LABOR & DELIVERY

Selective Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience, six (6) months must have been in labor and delivery, antepartum and postpartum, and fetal monitoring.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs and Emotional Support (STABLE); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued from the American Heart Association; AND Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (IFM/AFM). 

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) is highly recommended. 


SURGERY / RECOVERY ROOM

Selective Certification: Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required six (6) months of professional nursing experience in the operating/recovery room department OR recent acute care experience.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued from the American Heart Association; and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). 


URGENT CARE AT PO’IPŪ

Selective Certification: Of the six (6) months professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in Urgent/ Emergency, or other Clinical setting, where the employee independently demonstrated critical thinking skills and knowledge that is age specific. IV and phlebotomy skills required. Experience with triage, assisting with minor procedures, CLIA waived testing, scheduling Diagnostic exams.
