LOCATION: This is a regional position that is located in the Kaua’i Region Clinics of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kaua’i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.

Spanning several distinct locations, the Kaua’i Region Clinics network encompasses: The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Urgent Care at Po’ipū, The Clinic at Līhu’e, and The Clinic at Kapa’a. This extensive system offers the community an array of primary and specialized healthcare services, ranging from Family Practice to Outpatient Surgery, and includes disciplines such as Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Urology, Gastroenterology, Podiatry, and Internal Medicine.

The full performing Medical Assistant assists the clinical licensed staff by performing a variety of tasks to ensure that necessary nursing care and related technical work are provided and any other duties assigned. This position requires travel on a regular basis to other facilities within the Kaua’i region clinics based on operational needs. These position directly reports to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Clinic Nurse Manager), position number 57326, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities:

  • One (1) year of work experience which involved independently observing and reporting a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implementing care and/or treatment procedures for a case load of patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic clinical skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patients’ rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics’; basic medical terminology; and the ability to read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; and assist in providing paraprofessional nursing care to patient receiving care on an outpatient basis.
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience as a Medical Assistant in an Outpatient Clinic or similar health institution setting assisting professional licensed clinical staff in the provision of care to outpatient patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of emergency medical practices, techniques and procedures; functional anatomy and human physiology.

Certifications:

  • Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA) from the National Healthcare Association (NHA); Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT); or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) must be obtained at time of appointment; AND
  • Current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Desirable Qualifications: Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm manner; ability to communicate and work effectively with distraught or agitated individuals.
