POSITION TITLE: RESPIRATORY THERAPIST III (REGIONAL)

SALARY: $4,858 + $1,441 (shortage differential) per month at 1.0 FTE | SR20 | BU13

LOCATION:  These positions are regional and are located in the Respiratory Therapy department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH, SMMH, and The Kaua’i Region Clinics are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The Respiratory Therapy department provides services to residents/patients who have impairments, functional limitations with breathing function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes, in compliance with Medicaid, Medicare, Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA), Joint Commission (JC), Office of Healthcare Assurance (OHCA) and other regulatory and private agencies.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The Respiratory Therapist III (Regional) works in the respiratory therapy unit of a hospital and exercises considerable independent clinical judgment in applying scientific knowledge and theory to practical respiratory care problems in accordance with physicians’ orders; independently administering respiratory tests and treatment to patients with respiratory diseases and disorders including cases involving critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This position may be required to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, call backs, and stand-by and may be required to report to other facilities within Kaua’i Region as deemed necessary by the supervisor. The Respiratory Therapist III (Regional) reports to the Respiratory Therapist IV (Regional Supervisor) position no. 59205, or its designee.

Candidates must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, call backs, and stand-by and may be required to report to other facilities within Kaua’i Region as deemed necessary by the supervisor. Services are provided 24/7.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Baccalaureate degree in respiratory therapy from a school of respiratory therapy approved at the time of graduation by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Licensure:

  • Valid license with the State of Hawai’i as a Respiratory Therapist at the time of appointment;
  • Possession of current, valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license, type# 3 preferred.

Certification: Possession of current, valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) at the time of appointment of hire.

Respiratory Therapy Experience: One (1) year of professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist under medical supervision. The experience must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the evaluation, test, and treatment of respiratory therapy problems and the ability to develop and modify individual patient care plans.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Basic principles and practices of respiratory therapy; respiratory therapy treatment procedures; operation of respiratory therapy equipment; monitoring patients; charting observations, evaluation and testing procedures, treatment techniques including use and modifications of appropriate therapy equipment, performing or participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and methods of instructing patients and/or family members; current treatment techniques including use and modifications of appropriate therapy equipment; departmental rules and regulations, hospital policies and procedures, Medicare/Medicaid/the Joint Commission and other regulated   guidelines for the provision of Respiratory Therapy services; provision of respiratory services, general union contract agreement practices and general principles of management, supervision and public relations. 

Ability to: Apply the principles, methods and techniques of respiratory therapy; select and use evaluating and diagnostic procedures effectively; prepare treatment plans; deal effectively with patients and other individuals; operate standard respiratory therapy equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs; keep records and prepare reports and instruct patients and others in the application of respiratory therapy procedures; o independently apply principles, methods and techniques of respiratory therapy; instruct patients and others in the application of respiratory therapy procedures; and supervise lower level respiratory therapy personnel; Be an open ended thinker; good listener and communicator; non-judgmental and positive attitude; motivates; team player; work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, call backs, and stand-by; report to other facilities within Kaua’i Region as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
