STATUS:  Permanent | Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

SALARY:  $4,698 per month | HE08| BU10

LOCATION: These positions are located in the Emergency Services department of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) of The Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, which also consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, all operating under the public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. 

The Emergency Services department provides nursing care and first aid to patients requiring emergency services; assists physicians in the examination and treatment of patients; prepares and maintains records of all emergency cases; and arranges admittance to the hospital as required; and for outpatient surgery patients, provides preoperative and postoperative care.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are actively seeking for compassionate individuals who thrive working in a high-intensity, fast-paced setting to join our growing, dynamic ‘ohana as our full performing Emergency Room (ER) Assistants. In these roles,  you will work alongside our dedicated, licensed providers and clinical staff, assisting in delivering exceptional emergency care to patients in need. From providing essential support to our medical staff to ensuring our patients and their families feel comforted and care for, your role as an ER Assistant is invaluable. 

The ER Assistants will report directly to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), position no. 58450, or its designee. 

Candidates must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary based on operational needs. Services are provided 24/7. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Licensure: None required. 

Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities:

Two (2) years of work experience which involved independently observing and reporting on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implementing care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of acute care patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic nursing skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patients’ rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics; basic medical and nursing terminology; and the ability to read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; and assist in providing paraprofessional nursing care to emergency room patients and patients receiving care on an outpatient basis; AND

One (1) year of experience must have been obtained in a hospital emergency room and involved receiving formal and/or on-the-job training in emergency medical practices, techniques, procedures, equipment and supplies; and applying the knowledge gained by assisting professional nurses in the provision of care to emergency room patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of emergency medical practices, techniques and procedures; functional anatomy and human physiology; use of emergency equipment and supplies; and the ability to evaluate the condition of an injured or sick patient; recognize life-threatening signs and symptoms; render a variety of emergency aid and treatment; and operate and maintain emergency equipment and instruments.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Current BLS for Healthcare Workers issued from The American Heart Association (AHA) at the time of appointment is preferred. 

Substitutions Allowed: 

  • Current registration as a Paramedic or Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians substitutes for one (1) year of experience required at the full performance level.
  • Current registration as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and nine (9) months of hospital emergency room experience substitutes for one (1) year of experience required at the full performance level.
  • Successful completion of a State of Hawaii-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Basic training program and nine (9) months of hospital emergency room experience substitutes for one (1) year of experience required at the full performance level.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Desirable Qualifications: Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm manner; ability to communicate and work effectively with distraught or agitated individuals.

*NOTE: The compensation for paid holidays, vacation time and sick leave is based on a full-time equivalent (FTE) status for 8-hour workdays. If an employee’s FTE status is less than 1.0, the accrual of these benefits will be adjusted accordingly.
