JOB LOCATION: Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI
FUNCTION AND LOCATION: This position is located in Surgery/Operating Room department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics are a part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i operating nine (9) facilities statewide.
The Surgical Technician will provide support to the surgical team with the sterilization process of specific/specialty instruments and/or equipment needed for a variety of operating procedures while adhering to safety/infection control policies and procedures; assist in the transfer of patients, including but not limited to, from stretcher to Operating Room table, as well as assist in the positioning of patients; assist and anticipate needs and preferences of the physician or surgeon; maintain correct count of necessary equipment; assist in application of dressings as directed; decontaminate equipment and supplies and clean room as directed in procedures; and other responsibilities as assigned. This position may be subject to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, and, holidays.
The Surgical Technician reports directly to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Certifications Required: Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Experience, Essential Knowledge and Abilities: One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting receiving on-the-job training which provided knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments required; and involved applying the knowledge gained by performing as a scrub technician for progressively more complicated surgical procedures. Such experience must also have demonstrated the ability to independently perform as a member of the sterile team which involves preparing patients (i.e., shaving, draping, etc.) and the operating room for procedures.
Desirable Qualifications: Successful completion of a semester of course work in anatomy and physiology, and microbiology from an accredited community college or university.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of: good bilateral hand and finger dexterity in order to pass instruments to the surgeon, hold retractors, etc.
Ability to: distinguish colors and shades of color to assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, caring for specimens, preparing slides, etc.; hear verbal instructions from the surgical team; and read type written and handwritten instructions and reports in patients charts; stand, walk, and stoop for extended periods of time (4-5 hours) during lengthy surgical procedures; move freely and rapidly throughout the surgical suite.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Physical Requirements: All employees must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position.
