LOCATION: Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI

This position is located in the Surgery / Operation Room (OR) department at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region. KVMH, along with Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consists of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a, are all part of a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Surgery/Operating Room department provides Nursing Services for all surgical procedures; provides a sterile and sanitary environment for the performance of surgical operations; provides proper control so that preoperative requisites of the hospital and Medical Staff are properly carried out; ensures that necessary equipment, instruments, and drugs are available to the surgeon; and provides immediate postoperative nursing care for all surgical patients.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The Surgical Technician will provide support to the surgical team with the sterilization process of specific/specialty instruments and/or equipment needed for a variety of operating procedures while adhering to safety/infection control policies and procedures; assist in the transfer of patients, including but not limited to, from stretcher to Operating Room table, as well as assist in the positioning of patients; assist and anticipate needs and preferences of the physician or surgeon; maintain a correct count of necessary equipment; assist in the application of dressings as directed; decontaminate equipment and supplies and clean room as directed in procedures; and other responsibilities as assigned. The Surgical Technician reports directly to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), position no. 20890, or its designee.

Candidates must be able to work shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed based on hospital operational needs. Services are provided 24/7.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Certifications: Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent; Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Workers from the American Heart Association is required. 

Experience: One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting receiving on-the-job training which provided knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments required; and involved applying the knowledge gained by performing as a scrub technician for progressively more complicated surgical procedures. Such experience must also have demonstrated the ability to independently perform as a member of the sterile team which involves preparing patients (i.e., shaving, draping, etc.) and the operating room for procedures.

Desirable Qualifications: Successful completion of a semester of coursework in anatomy and physiology, and microbiology from an accredited community college or university.


Knowledge of: good bilateral hand and finger dexterity in order to pass instruments to the surgeon, hold retractors, etc.

Ability to: distinguish colors and shades of color to assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, caring for specimens, preparing slides, etc.; hear verbal instructions from the surgical team, and read typewritten and handwritten instructions and reports in patients’ charts; stand, walk, and stoop for extended periods of time (4-5 hours) during lengthy surgical procedures; move freely and rapidly throughout the surgical suite.


Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
