LOCATION: This is a regional position located in the Finance – General Accounting department of the Kaua’i Region of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation for the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals, Kaua’i Region Clinics, and its affiliates.

The Kaua’i Region Finance – General Accounting department provides budgeting, financial planning, general accounting, revenue management, and financial reporting services to the region and its affiliates. The Finance department operates at the highest level of integrity to ensure financial stability while complying with regulations and optimizing resources that support the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

We are actively seeking for a dynamic, detail-oriented individual to join our growing ‘ohana as the Accountant II (Regional). This position will assist in preparing professional accounting work, which includes, but is not limited to, analyzing fiscal data, maintaining accounting systems, preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and other accounting duties and functions. This position requires excellent analytical and problem solving skills with a strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be available to work long and irregular hours, which may include nights and holidays as required, especially during month and year-end closing. The Accountant II (Regional) position reports to the Accountant V (Regional), position no. 20743, or its designee.

Possibility of promotion to an Accountant III after successfully meeting qualification requirements, expectations, and performance of the position.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with at least 12 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing subjects.

Licensure: Possession of a current, valid driver’s license type# 3 preferred.

Certifications: None required. 

Experience: One-half (½) year of progressively responsible professional accounting or auditing experience which may have included teaching accounting at the university level.


Knowledge of: principles and practices of accounting; report writing; the preparation and analysis of financial statements and financial report writing; techniques of accounting: fixed assets, prepaid accounts, cash and bank reconciliations, general ledger accounts, trial balance.

Ability to: learn to apply various accounting methods, techniques, and procedures; learn and apply pertinent laws, rules and regulations applicable to the assigned department; deal effectively with people; operate adding and calculating machines; apply this knowledge to complex accounting problems; develop solutions to complex and unprecedented situations; develop new work procedures to improve processes; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Additional Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; strong written and oral communication; organization and attention to detail; analytical and problem solving skills; time management; systems analysis; mathematical and deductive reasoning; critical thinking; active learning.

Working Conditions

  • The position will work in an office environment with prolonged sitting and extended periods of working with a personal computer and in meetings.
