POSITION TITLE: ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR – ENTRY LEVEL or FULL PERFORMANCE (REGIONAL)

STATUS:  Full-Time | Permanent (1.0 FTE)

SALARY:  $4,933 – $5,798 per month | HE08 – HE10 | BU10

LOCATION: This is a regional role within the Recreational Therapy (RT) department at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), part of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region includes Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and SMMH, both designated as critical access hospitals, along with the Kaua’i Region Clinics and affiliated entities.

The Recreational Therapy department provides an appropriate therapeutic recreation program to maintain the physical and mental health of patients and to assist patients with achieving their physical and mental rehabilitation goals.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are currently seeking an individual who is passionate about enhancing the lives of others through engaging activities to join our team as the Activities Coordinator – Entry Level or Full Performance. This position works in a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility and is primarily responsible for directing an activity program to meet the patients’/residents’ social, recreational, physical, educational, and spiritual needs by using meaningful activity. The Activity Programs are used to enable the patients/residents to function and maintain their dignity and fullest mental and physical capacity for as long as possible. These programs are also used to enhance the patient’s/resident’s feelings of usefulness and encourage self-confidence, self-respect, and empowerment. The position also is responsible for assessment, program development, performance improvement, budget development/monitoring, and personnel management. The role may involve working rotating shifts, which include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, travel to various facilities within the region may be necessary to meet operational demands and address patient needs.

The Activities Coordinator – Entry Level or Full Performance (Regional) reports to the Administrative Services Officer I (Regional Outreach Manager), position no. 60271, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Licensure: Possession of active, valid State of Hawai’i type# 3 driver’s license.

Certification: Candidates must hold a current, valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA). If not already certified, individuals are required to obtain this certification within the first six (6) months of employment.

Prerequisite Qualifications Required for the Entry LevelThree (3) years of work experience in a health facility of which the major duties involved planning and implementing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures. 

Substitutions Allowed for Entry Level: Graduation from an Activity Professionals Program approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals, Level 1 -Activity Assistant Certified (AAC) may substitute for all of the entry-level work experience.

Prerequisite Qualifications Required for the Full Performance Level: Three (3) years of work experience in a health facility of which the major duties involved planning and implementing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures; AND one (1) year of work experience as an Activities Coordinator which involved the planning, assessing, and coordinating a comprehensive Activity Program to enhance the patient’s/resident’s social, recreational, physical, educational and any other needs; human anatomy; administrative practices and procedures in directing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures in a hospital or other medically oriented institution or program; budget preparation; and the ability to read, write, speak, and understand and communicate effectively with others in English; supervise and direct the work of subordinates and plan and conduct training programs.

Substitutions Allowed: Individuals may substitute all of the required full-performance work experience with one of the following.

  1. Graduation from an Occupational Therapy Program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association and currently registered by the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
  2. Graduation from a Therapeutic Recreation Program approved by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and currently certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
  3. Graduation from an Activities Professionals Program approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), Level 2-Activity Director Certified (ADC).

Desirable Qualifications: Team player; patience; neatness; reliability; resourcefulness; and punctuality; Valid State of Hawaii driver license; successful completion of training curriculum and passing a competency evaluation test approved by the State of Hawai’i and per the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987.
