JOB LOCATION: HHSC Kauai Region (KVMH, SMMH, & Kauai Region Clinics)
FUNCTION: This position is located in the Quality Services department of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kauai Region. Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kauai Region Clinics are part of the Kauai Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii, operating nine (9) facilities statewide.
Also known as the Regional Safety Officer, this position is primarily responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of Kauai Region’s Safety Program to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and employees.
The Hospital Environment of Care/Safety Officer I will serve in the trainee capacity, receiving formal and on-the-job training in the principles, concepts, work processed, regulations, and of Hospital Environment of Care and safety Program activities. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Life Safety Codes, Environment of Care (EOC) Disaster preparation and all other federal, state and local regulatory compliance programs observed by health care organizations. Position requires travel to and from facilities within the Kauai Region on a regular basis and will report directly to the Regional Chief Quality Officer or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
Excess work experience of the type and quality described below or progressively responsible professional work experience which provided knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to those normally acquired in four (4) years of successful study leading to a bachelor’s degree may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
The education or experience background must also include demonstrated ability to write reports, read, comprehend and interpret complex written material, speak effectively and solve complex problems logically and systematically.
Certification & Licensure: None required.
Experience Requirement: Minimum six (6) months of professional work experience which demonstrated general knowledge of public and/or private health care safety and environment of care programs; TJC (TJC) and Medicare, Medicaid standards; National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Codes and all other federal, state and local regulatory compliance programs observed by health care organizations desired.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of: Thorough knowledge of the hospital environment of care programs; TJC standards; NFPA Life Safety Codes and all other federal, state and local regulatory compliance programs observed by health care organizations.
Ability to: Understand, interpret and apply, rules, regulations and standards to the specific needs of the hospital; analyze and identify problems and recommend sound solutions for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the environment of care and safety programs; effectively communicate ideas and information both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; develop training and informational materials and activities to promote the environment of care and safety programs; plan and conducts formal and informal training.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Any condition, which would cause applicants to be a hazard to themselves or others, is cause for disqualification.
Mental/Emotional Requirements: All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties and responsibilities and working conditions.
Special Requirement: During a disaster and other emergency situations, must be willing and able to work for extended periods of time beyond the normal working hours and workdays. Must also be willing and able to work for extended periods of time on the island on which the disaster or emergency occurred.
