JOB LOCATION:  Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii 

FUNCTION:  This position is located in the Imaging Services Unit of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH is part of the Kauai Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii operating 9 facilities statewide.

The function of the Imaging Department is to provide diagnostic imaging services, scheduled, or on an emergency basis, as required for the care and treatment of inpatients and outpatients, aged birth to death. The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following procedures: diagnostic radiography, computed tomography, tele-radiography, mammography, and ultrasonography.

The Ultrasound/Echo Specialist produces two-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs, performs a variety of diagnostic procedures including echocardiogram, using ultrasound equipment, for use by physician in diagnosis of diseases and study of malfunction of organs. The position may work on rotating shifts, with work on weekends and holidays and may require standby and call back duty. This position also requires providing coverage at SMMH when needed.

This position reports to the reports to the Regional Imaging Supervisor.


To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree from an approved program recognized by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

Experience: One (1) year of experience as a staff Ultrasonographer in a clinical or hospital environment. One (1) year of work experience as a staff Echo Tech/Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer performing diagnostic cardiac examinations in a clinical or hospital environment.

Specialized Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience as a specialist of which at least a minimum of one (1) year of work experience must have been gained in each of two (2) or more of the following modalities: echocardiography and ultrasound in a clinical or hospital environment.

Certification Requirements: Registered American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) or Health Care Provider must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

License Required:  None required.


Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge of imaging equipment, radiation and ultrasound physics, radiation safety, medical terminology and department protocols. The incumbent interacts with patients of all ages, the majority of interactions will involve the adult population. Therefore, the employee must be competent in the interpretation of a patient’s self-report or behavior and this information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. The treatment should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs and range of treatment needs for each patient.

Knowledge and Abilities used in Performing Key Duties:

Demonstrated proficiency in the application of all skills, knowledge and abilities, specified below:

Performs Ultrasound and Echocardiogram procedures at a technical level sufficient to provide adequate diagnosis with limited supervision and in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures in the operation of ultrasound and echocardiography equipment.
