JOB LOCATION:  Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital – Waimea, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION:  This position is located in Nutritional Services department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH).  KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), The Kaua’i Region Clinics are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i operating nine (9) facilities statewide.

The Kitchen Helper is responsible for–but is not limited to–routine manual work in kitchen for the preparation of the best possible nourishing and attractive meals as economically as possible to all patients, employees and visitors of the hospital; administers food service efficiently and provides scientifically planned diets for patients in promoting the objectives of dietetics; maintains cleanliness of kitchen and dining room areas; washes and cleans kitchen utensils and equipment; and performs other related duties as assigned.  This position may be subject to work on weekends and holidays.

The Kitchen Helper reports directly to the Cook IV, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Experience and Training: None required. Experience in general kitchen work where food is prepared; or any equivalent combination of experience and training preferred.

DESIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of: Preparation of raw and processed food to be cooked; methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning kitchen equipment, appliances and utensils; kitchen safety and sanitation requirements; personal hygiene.

Ability to: Learn quantity cooking; operate kitchen equipment and appliances; measure food servings and serve food; give and receive oral and written instructions; work cooperatively with others; tolerate kitchen heat and noises; perform heavy lifting, moving and carrying typical of the class. Work independently and complete all job assignments on a daily basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Physical demands may include moderate to heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 pounds with assistance) and moderate amount of standing/walking. Environmental conditions may include extreme hot, cold and temperature changes such as walking into the walk-in freezer). Working conditions may require exposure to toxic chemicals used for cleaning. Protective equipment may be required such as gloves, face protection or apron.
