LOCATION: This is a regional position located in the Business Office at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region. SMMH, along with Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, are all part of a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Business Office’s role encompasses a range of services such as outpatient registration, pre-authorization, LTC admissions, financial counseling, denials management, communication, transaction handling, mail and package distribution, invoice and voucher processing, banking, and managing patient accounts, along with other related duties.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are actively seeking a dedicated individual with a knack for problem-solving with a compassionate approach and drive to make a difference in people’s lives to join our growing ‘ohana as our Patient Financial Navigator! You will be responsible to help patients navigate the financial aspects of healthcare including but not limited to communicating with the patient’s health care providers, so they get the information they need to make decisions about their health care, assist with billing inquiries, and help resolve issues related to medical billing.

This position will also oversee the daily administrative operations for the SMMH’s Business Office, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations. Duties include, but is not limited to, public relations; supporting various departments such as Patient Access – Hospital, Patient Financial Services (PFS), General Accounting, Materials Management, Ancillary Services, Social Work Services, and Health Information Management (HIM) departments; delivers outstanding customer service; training new personnel; and any other duties assigned.

The incumbent is required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays and travel to multiple locations within HHSC Kaua’i Region.

The Patient Financial Navigator (Regional) reports to the Regional Revenue Cycle Officer, position no. 109768, or its designee.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. Relevant substitutions allowed.

Licensure: Current, valid State of Hawaii (type 3) driver’s license is required.

General Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ professional work experience in general operations, administration, finance and accounting or human resources.

Desirable Qualifications: Attention to detail and problem-solving skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; strong organizational and planning skills in a fast-paced environment.


Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation and word usage; use of standard office machines; medical terminology; techniques of interviewing others to obtain pertinent information; patient accounting operations, registration and standard intake techniques; third party payor requirements, credit and collection practices; Federal regulations including Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), Advance Directives, Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and HIPAA as they relate to hospital intake and payment for services; customer service philosophies and practices.

Ability to: make arithmetic computations; compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately; type at the rate of 40 net words per minute and be computer knowledgeable in a windows based environment; operate a telephone switchboard, teleprocessing terminal, and inter-communication system; file materials numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instructions; accept and follow instructions; understand, explain and apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertinent to the admission of patients; and the ability to speak and write clearly.
