JOB TITLE: PHARMACY TECHNICIAN – FULL PERFORMANCE
SALARY: $3,721/month at 1.0 FTE (HE06 ; BU10/BU70)
JOB FUNCTIONS: This position is located in the Pharmacy Department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). KVMH, Samuel Mahelona and the Kaua’i Region Clinics are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii, operating statewide.
The Pharmacy Technician will be responsible to assist the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical services in accordance with established procedures and methods including charting/charging reconciliation on all patients daily, addressing issues to the attention of the Pharmacists, ordering medication, inventory receiving, and answering telephone calls and triage to the appropriate person. In addition, this position will perform daily stocking/removal of outdated medications from automated dispensing machines throughout the hospital; assist the Surgery/Operating Room Department with endoscopy tray deliveries and restocking; conduct monthly medication inspections; submits weekly narcotic dispense reports to the State Narcotics Enforcement; repackaging medication for unit dose/dispense home use and other duties as assigned.
This position may be required to work on rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays. The Pharmacy Technician will report directly to the Regional Director of Pharmacy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. Also, please see below additional requirements according to the specific department.
Education: High School diploma preferred.
One (1) year of work experience in a pharmacy setting (i.e., community pharmacy, hospitals, other medical institutions) which provided basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; pharmaceutical system of weights and measures (e.g., milligrams, milliliters, cubic centimeters, etc.); commonly used pharmaceutical preparations used in the treatment of illnesses; dosage requirements; storage requirements; routes of drug administration; and practices and procedures employed in filling pharmacy prescriptions; and the ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division); and transcribe accurate medication profiles.
One (1) year of work experience assisting a licensed pharmacist in a hospital which required receiving and reading prescription and medication orders from physicians; performing arithmetic computations to determine proper measurements/quantities of pharmaceutical components required; measuring, counting, packaging, and labeling items and arranging them for final professional review. The work experience must have demonstrated a knowledge of commonly used pharmaceutical preparations used in the treatment of illnesses, dosage requirements, dosage forms, storage requirements; experience in receiving and reading requisitions from pharmacists; measuring, counting, packaging, and labeling items; aseptic techniques; routes of drug administration; pharmaceutical nomenclature; pharmaceutical system of weights and measures; procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and sterile compounding; arranging medication for final professional review; maintaining accurate inventory records; State and Federal pharmacy regulations; applicable hospital/unit policies and procedures; and the ability to provide pharmaceutical services in accordance with established procedures and methods; measure drug doses accurately; maintain records and prepare reports; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Successful completion of a pharmacy technician program from an accredited school and/or a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) may be substituted for six (6) months of experience.
Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college or university may be substituted for all of the experience required for the full performance level.
Certification of Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
Desirable Qualifications: Ability to learn quickly; be a “team player” and get along well with others; be self-motivated; use a computer to enter and retrieve data; good memory; and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
