POSITION TITLE: RECREATIONAL THERAPIST V (REGIONAL)

STATUS:  Permanent | Full-time (1.0 FTE)

SALARY: $5,713 per month | SR24 | BU13

LOCATION: This position is regional and is located in the Recreational Therapy Department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH, SMMH, and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, Urgent Care at Po’ipū, The Clinic at Līhu’e, and The Clinic at Kapa’a is all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Recreational Therapy department is a multi-disciplinary team and provides an appropriate therapeutic recreation program to maintain the physical and mental health of patients and assist patients with achieving their physical and mental rehabilitation goals.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The Regional Recreational Therapist V technically and administratively plans, organizes, develops, implements, and administers Kaua’i Region’s Recreational Therapy program by identifying residents’ needs and providing for the delivery of supportive, therapeutic, and quality recreational activities. This position provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. This position reports to the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, position no. 109572, or its designee.

Candidates must be able to work nights and weekends and must be able to travel on a regular basis to and from facilities within the region as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, special education, psychology, or sociology which included a minimum of twelve semester credit hours in recreation or therapy-oriented areas of study such as community recreation, physical fitness, personality and behavior, and/or abnormal psychology.

Licensure:

  • A current, valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license.
  • P.U.C license is desirable. Otherwise, must be eligible and willing to apply.

Certification: Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association.

Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional work experience in a recreational therapy program which along with other therapy programs, provided comprehensive treatment and rehabilitative services to the physically and mentally ill and handicapped, emotionally disturbed, developmentally disabled, substance abused, psychosocially delinquent and the aging.

Supervisory Experience: Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, previous work experience in a position that demonstrates or performs supervisory functions or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: trends and developments in recreational therapy, administrative practices and procedures, and budget preparation requirements.

Ability to: supervise and direct the work of subordinates and plan and conduct training programs.
