JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI


FUNCTION: This position is located in the Emergency Department (ED) of the Nursing Services Department of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). SMMH, Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i operating statewide.

The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III provides professional nursing care within the ED; coordinates care with other disciplines: provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care; determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system; communicates with the ED physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies; responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment; and any other duties as assigned. In the event that there are no patients in the department, the RPN III may be subject to cross training and may be assigned to assist other departments within the facility (Long Term Care, Behavioral Health, etc.). In addition, this position is also subject to a combination of 12- and 8- hours rotating shift work, including work on the weekends and holidays.

The RPN III works under the general supervision of the RPN: Unit Nurse Manager, or its designee.


To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advance Care Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association must be presented upon appointment of hire.

Experience: Six (6) months of responsible professional nursing experience.

Select Certification: Of the six (6) months professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in emergency services.


Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.

Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees. Must also have the ability to prepare comprehensive nursing diagnosis and nursing care plans; and plan and direct the work of lower level registered nurses and nursing assistants.

Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, The Joint Commission, procedures used in surveillance and control of hospital infections.


Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
