LOCATIONS: These positions are located in various Nursing Services (Emergency Services, Long Term Care, Medical/Surgical, Obstetrics, etc.) departments of HHSC Kaua’i Region. Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the immediate supervision of a higher-level registered professional nurse (RPN), the RPN II receives orientation and guidance on nursing policies and procedures and nursing care techniques; develops and/or implements nursing care plans for assigned patients or clients; provides nursing care plans for assigned patients or clients; provides nursing care, treatment services and/or health education information; and performs other related duties as assigned. In addition, these positions are subject to cross-training and may be assigned to float and assist other departments within the facility as needed.

Candidates must be available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on hospital/clinic operation needs. Services are provided 24/7.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. Also, please see below the additional requirements according to the specific department. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Graduation from a nursing program with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.

Licensure: Valid, active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of a valid license).

Experience: None required. 

General Certification: Current certification issued by the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers. See below for additional certification requirements based on the department. 

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.

Ability to: Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff, and employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). 


EMERGENCY SERVICES

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association is required. 

Applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association and NIH Stroke Scale.

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is highly recommended. 


INTENSIVE CARE / CRITICAL CARE UNIT

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association is required. 

Applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association and NIH Stroke Scale.

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is highly recommended. 


OBSTETRICS / LABOR & DELIVERY

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs and Emotional Support (STABLE); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association; AND Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (IFM/AFM). 

Possession of current certification issued by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) is highly recommended. 


SURGERY / RECOVERY ROOM

Certifications: In addition to the BLS certification, applicants are also required to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued from the American Heart Association; and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
