POSITION TITLE: RESPIRATORY THERAPIST III

STATUS:  Permanent / Part-Time (1.0 FTE)

SALARY: $4,337 + $1,962 (shortage differential) per month | SR20 | BU13

LOCATION:  This position is located in the Respiratory Therapy department at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region. KVMH, along with Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consists of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a, are all part of a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Respiratory Therapy department provides pulmonary and lung therapeutic services to residents and patients who have impairments, functional limitations with breathing function, and health status resulting from injury, disease, or other causes, in compliance with Medicaid, Medicare, Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA), Joint Commission (JC), Office of Healthcare Assurance (OHCA) and other regulatory and private agencies.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The Respiratory Therapist III exercises considerable independent clinical judgment in applying scientific knowledge and theory to practice respiratory care problems in accordance with physicians’ orders. The position is responsible for independently administering respiratory tests and treatment to patients with respiratory diseases and disorders including cases involving critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients.  The position may be required to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. In addition, the incumbent may be required to report to other facilities within Kaua’i Region as deemed necessary by the supervisor. The Respiratory Therapist III reports to the Respiratory Therapist IV (Regional Supervisor) position no. 59205, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in respiratory therapy from a school of respiratory therapy approved at the time of graduation by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).  

Licensure:  A valid license with the State of Hawai’i as a Respiratory Therapist at the time of appointment.

Certification:  Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA). 

General Experience: One (1) year of professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist under medical supervision. The experience must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the evaluation, test, and treatment of respiratory therapy problems and the ability to develop and modify individual patient care plans.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of Respiratory Therapy principles and practices, departmental rules and regulations, hospital policies and procedures, Medicare/Medicaid/the Joint Commission, and other regulated guidelines for the provision of Respiratory Therapy services.  The provision of respiratory services, general union contract agreement practices, and general principles of management, supervision, and public relations.  Be an open-ended thinker; good listener and communicator; non-judgmental and positive attitude; motivates; team player.

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
