JOB LOCATION:  Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, Hawai’i 


FUNCTION: This position is located in the Acute Behavioral Health Unit of the Nursing Services Section of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). SMMH, Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), and Kaua’i Region Clinics, are part of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaii.

The Acute Behavioral Health Unit at SMMH provides nursing, social work, and ancillary health services to involuntary and voluntary patients with acute and/or chronic psychiatric and behavioral problems.

The primary function of the Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) V is to assume the nurse manager responsibilities for the organization, management, and direction of nursing services in the Acute Behavioral Health Unit, ensuring the provision of optimal care for patients while addressing their individualized age-appropriate needs. Incumbent must be able to coordinate and directly supervise the staff, coordinate care with the medical staff, be able to perform the technical and clinical functions, requirements, skills and competencies of a Behavioral Health Registered Nurse, and have the knowledge and experience to serve as a resource to staff on clinical matters. This position, although assigned to the Behavioral Health Unit, will also require cross training, floating to other units and is subject to shift work.

The RPN V reports directly to the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, or its designee.


To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 

Licensure: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawaii RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.


One and one-half (1 1/2) year of professional nursing experience, of which one year of satisfactory work experience must have been comparable to Registered Professional Nurse III in State service, where applicant independently provided nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital or institution. Psychosocial Nursing preferred.

Supervisory Experience: Must have one-half (1/2) years of supervisory experience which included: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees. Preferred supervisory aptitude and experience in an Acute Psychiatric/Behavioral Health setting.

Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association must be presented at the time of appointment of hire.

Select Certification: Of the one and one-half (1 1/2) years professional nursing experience required, six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in PSYCHIATRIC or BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT.


Knowledge of: Nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing. The ability to apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care, recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient’s condition and take appropriate action. Positions at this level should be able to initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital; have knowledge of Joint Commission requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts. Good working knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and demonstrated administrative aptitude.

Ability to: Communicate well with individuals at all levels; work as a team member; apply management, leadership, decision-making, interpersonal and communication skills.


Management Experience: Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills desired.

Administrative Skills: Compose letters/memorandums, coordinate meetings, develop office procedures, establish filing systems, input data into computer programs ,interview others, maintain patient charts, proofread documents.

Machinery Skills: Diagnostic equipment, fax, computer.


Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
