LOCATION: This is a regional role within the Recreational Therapy (RT) department at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), part of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region includes KVMH and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals, along with the Kaua’i Region Clinics and affiliated entities.

The Recreational Therapy department provides an appropriate therapeutic recreation program to maintain the physical and mental health of patients and to assist patients with achieving their physical and mental rehabilitation goals.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are currently seeking an individual who is passionate about enhancing the lives of others through engaging activities to join our team as one of the regional Activities Coordinators –  Full Performance. This position works in a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility and is primarily responsible for directing an activity program to meet the patients’/residents’ social, recreational, physical, educational, and spiritual needs by using meaningful activity. The Activity Programs are used to enable the patients/residents to function and maintain their dignity and fullest mental and physical capacity for as long as possible. These programs are also used to enhance the patient’s/resident’s feelings of usefulness and encourage self-confidence, self-respect, and empowerment. The position also is responsible for assessment, program development, performance improvement, budget development/monitoring, and personnel management. The role may involve working rotating shifts, which include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, travel to various facilities within the region may be necessary to meet operational demands and address patient needs.

The Activities Coordinator – Full Performance (Regional) reports to the Administrative Services Officer I (Regional Outreach Manager), position no. 60271, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Licensure: Possession of active, valid State of Hawai’i type# 3 driver’s license.

Certification: Candidates must hold a current, valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA). If not already certified, individuals are required to obtain this certification within the first six (6) months of employment.

Prerequisite Qualifications Required for the Full Performance Level: Three (3) years of work experience in a health facility of which the major duties involved planning and implementing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures; AND one (1) year of work experience as an Activities Coordinator which involved the planning, assessing, and coordinating a comprehensive Activity Program to enhance the patient’s/resident’s social, recreational, physical, educational and any other needs; human anatomy; administrative practices and procedures in directing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures in a hospital or other medically oriented institution or program; budget preparation; and the ability to read, write, speak, and understand and communicate effectively with others in English; supervise and direct the work of subordinates and plan and conduct training programs.

Substitutions Allowed: Individuals may substitute all of the required full-performance work experience with one of the following.

  1. Graduation from an Occupational Therapy Program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association and currently registered by the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
  2. Graduation from a Therapeutic Recreation Program approved by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and currently certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
  3. Graduation from an Activities Professionals Program approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), Level 2-Activity Director Certified (ADC).

The Nursing Administration – Acute functions in close relationship with other services administratively and professionally; coordinates all patient care needs from admission to discharge; coordinates the relationship of nursing units via supervisors; conducts on‐going training of employees including orientation and in‐service education; evaluates patient care and plans for current and future needs; establishes a plan of administrative authority with definite delineation of responsibilities and duties for each category of nursing personnel relating not only to patient care, but also to the educational responsibilities of the nursing services departments.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the global oversight of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive (RCNE), the Director of Nursing (DON) organizes, directs, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the activities of the nursing services departments to ensure safe quality care for patients and residents and performs any other required duties as assigned. The DON is responsible to provide oversight to ensure that the individualized age‐appropriate care needs of the newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patient population are met and monitors for compliance with applicable laws and regulations and with standards of care as outlined by the State. As a member of the nursing administrative / management team, the DON works closely with the RCNE on all aspects of planning, organizing, developing, and implementing the provision of health care services.

LOCATION: This is a regional position located in the Hospital Administration department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kaua’i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.

The Kaua’i Region operates two critical access hospitals (CAH) – Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), located in Waimea, Kaua’i, is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and is licensed to operate a 45-bed facility. KVMH has 15 acute care beds, 10 acute/SNF swing beds and a Distinct Part SNF/ICF swing 20 bed LTC unit. KVMH services include Long Term Care, ICU, Surgery, Medical/Surgical, Maternity, Pediatrics, Emergency Department and Outpatient ancillary services. Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) located in Kapaa, Kaua’i, is accredited by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and is licensed to operate an 80-bed facility. SMMH has 9 Acute Psychiatric beds; 5 Acute/Skilled Nursing Facility Swing (SNF) beds; and 66 dually certified SNF/Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) beds).  SMMH services include Long Term Care, Behavioral Health, Emergency Department and Outpatient ancillary services.  The Kaua’i Region also operates the Kaua’i Region Clinics – 6 primary care/sub-specialty clinics throughout the island and an urgent care clinic located in Poipu.   

The Hospital Administration department directs, coordinates, and controls the operations of the hospital in the care and treatment of all patients/residents. Functions also include medico-administrative control and relations; administering hospital policies and procedures, standing orders, personnel policies, business office polices; program planning and development; operating and capital budget preparation; public regulations; implementation of contracts and/or agreements; ensuring hospital accreditation standards and fire, safety, and emergency services; statistical, research, and evaluation reports preparation; producing annual reports; implementing collective bargaining agreements; admissions and communications and mail services.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are actively seeking for a visionary leader with a passion for driving operational excellence and thrives in a fast-paced, innovative environment to join our team as our Regional Chief Operating Officer. This position is responsible for executive leadership; operational planning; human resources management; quality of services; the allocation of financial, physical and human resources; compliance with regulatory; licensing and accreditation requirements;  promotion of the hospital and on-going management of daily regional hospital operations in clinical and non-clinical support departments/functions (Imaging Services; Laboratory; Nutritional Services; Pharmacy; Rehabilitation Services – Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy; Respiratory Therapy; Facilities;  Environmental Services; Security Services; and Safety). This position reports to the Regional Chief Executive Officer (RCEO), position no. 109678. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration, or Hospital Administration, Public Health or Business Administration.  The Master’s Degree may be substituted by a minimum of 15 years of administrative management experience in Nursing, Administration, and Operations.

Experience: Ten (10) years of professional nursing administration, hospital administration, public health or business administration experience with sufficient previous administration experience in a hospital/system environment.  Familiarity with all types of patient care and products should be demonstrated.

License: Current Hawai’i State Nursing Home Administrator’s License (NHA) desired. Current State of Hawai’i type# 3 driver’s license preferred.

Certification: Training and qualification in advanced nursing education, administration, and management.

Desired Qualifications: Member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
