POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

LOCATION: This position is located in the Nursing Administration – Acute department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of KVMH, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kaua’i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.
The Nursing Administration – Acute functions in close relationship with other services administratively and professionally; coordinates all patient care needs from admission to discharge; coordinates the relationship of nursing units via supervisors; conducts on‐going training of employees including orientation and in‐service education; evaluates patient care and plans for current and future needs; establishes a plan of administrative authority with definite delineation of responsibilities and duties for each category of nursing personnel relating not only to patient care, but also to the educational responsibilities of the nursing services departments.
JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the global oversight of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive (RCNE), the Director of Nursing (DON) organizes, directs, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the activities of the nursing services departments to ensure safe quality care for patients and residents and performs any other required duties as assigned. The DON is responsible to provide oversight to ensure that the individualized age‐appropriate care needs of the newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patient population are met and monitors for compliance with applicable laws and regulations and with standards of care as outlined by the State. As a member of the nursing administrative / management team, the DON works closely with the RCNE on all aspects of planning, organizing, developing, and implementing the provision of health care services.
In an emergency or in the absence of the RCNE, this position assumes the necessary functions and responsibilities of the management of nursing. The position may require extended hours, including weekends and holidays, based on operational needs. This role may involve travel to various facility locations within the region as necessary to fulfill operational requirements.
This position reports to the RCNE, position no. 109572, or its designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications.
Education: Graduation with a bachelors’ degree from an accredited school of nursing. Evidence of continuing education should be demonstrated, including course work in nursing administration. Master’s degree preferred.
Licensure: Possession of an active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. An active, valid State of Hawai’i type# 3 driver’s license preferred.
Certification: Possession of current certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Workers (BLS). Possession of current certification in Advanced Nursing Administration is highly desirable.
Work Experience: Ten (10) to fifteen (15) years of nursing experience with previous nursing administration experience in a hospital/system environment. One (1) year of management experience at the level of nursing supervisory or as the assistant director of nursing or equivalent are required. Master’s degree in related field may be substituted for one year of managerial experience. Experience in Emergency Department and/or Critical Access Hospital preferred. Familiarity with all types of patient care equipment and products should be demonstrated.

Knowledge of: nursing techniques and procedures; knowledge of Hospital/Institution methods and procedures employed in implementation of programs; knowledge of the operations, policies, legal requirements, and techniques of implementing the nursing program; and knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and management as they relate to personnel, work control, etc.
Ability to: plan and direct the work of subordinate personnel; plan and schedule the work of others; present educational programs; develop policies and procedures, apply sound administrative principles and techniques; analyze, evaluate, and draw sound conclusions from available data; present facts clearly, both orally and in writing; exercise judgment, tact, and discretion in analyzing and explaining policies and procedures; establish and maintaining effective working relationships with facility officials, employees and the general public; handle changing priorities in a dynamic, fast‐paced environment; document and maintain records accurately, respond quickly and take appropriate action in emergencies, and follow oral and written instructions; planning, implementation, organizing, motivating, delegating, coaching, communicating, directing, supervising, evaluating, and creating a compassionate and principle‐centered atmosphere are some of the essential skills.
Additional Skills: Strong background in interpersonal communication, quality improvement activity, team building, strategic planning, and fiscal responsibility; demonstrates an understanding of education and research principles and application to nursing; demonstrates knowledge of basic computer programs including word‐processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail; applies human relations knowledge and skills of leadership, group dynamics, labor relations, motivation, and change theory; sets standards for qualifications of personnel; demonstrates knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, licensing regulation, etc.; has oversight of recruitment, hiring, and retention including contractual work relationships related to nursing.

Working Conditions: may be exposed to infections and contagious diseases; frequent prolonged sitting, performing desk/computer work and some standing/walking; subject to long hours, rounds on off‐shifts required as essential personnel in community disasters; must respond to calls 24 hours/7 days a week; may need to travel to other facilities in the region and as required for hospital / corporate business; regularly exposed to the risk of blood‐borne diseases; subject to hazards of flammable, explosive gases; occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements; contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances; exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, illness, injury, and death); subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handles emergency or crisis situations; subject to many interruptions; occasionally subjected to irregular hours; may be required to make judgments or take actions which could result in the death of a patient; handles absentee replacement on short notice; subject to long and irregular hours; many interruptions.
