Knowledge of: Business English; spelling; filing; arithmetic; office practices and procedures; and the operation and maintenance of common office appliances and equipment (e.g., word processors, copying machines, etc.).

Knowledge of medical terminology (e.g., prefixes, suffixes and word roots, commonly used abbreviations and symbols, rules of medical word building, etc.).

Ability to: Communicate effectively orally and in writing; deal tactfully with others; carry out a variety of standard office clerical routines; perform basic arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division); operate common office equipment; prepare simple narrative and numerical reports; learn medical terminology; and manage and prioritize multiple tasks during periods of intense activity. Under the global oversight of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, the Director of Nursing organizes, directs, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the activities of the Nursing Department to ensure safe quality care for patients/residents.

As a member of the nursing administrative/management team, works closely with the Regional Chief Nurse Executive on all aspects of planning, organizing, developing, and implementing the provision of health care services.

In an emergency or in the absence of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, this position assumes the necessary functions and responsibilities of the management of nursing with the exception of procurement.

 Supervisory Experience:  Two (2) years as a supervisor of nurses responsible for all patient care and treatment services for a hospital.  this experience must have included one (1) year of experience supervising professional as well as sub professional nursing service employees.

Administrative Experience: One (1) year of Administrative Experience in the in organizing, controlling and directing nursing services in a hospital, which involved active participation in and major responsibility for the development, management, execution, and coordination of policies, activities, and programs.

Certification: BLS

License Requirement:  Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Hawaii.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Must possess a thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; knowledge of Hospital/Institution methods and procedures employed in implementation of programs; knowledge of the operations, policies, legal requirements, and techniques of implementing the nursing program of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital; and knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and management as they relate to personnel, work control, etc.
