FUNCTION: This position is located in the Waimea Obstetrics Department, Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH). The Obstetrics/Nursery unit provides all phases of nursing care involving prenatal care, disorders of pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, labor delivery, and care of the newborn and the mother. This position is responsible for the provision of professional nursing care to patients in accordance with accepted standards and hospital policy.

The primary function of this position provides acute nursing care and treatment services on a 24-hour basis and is responsible for the total age-specific nursing care of the newborn, adult/adolescent patient in the unit. In the event there are no patients in the unit, this position may be assigned to various units within the Nursing Services and may require cross training and floating as assigned. Position is also subject to a combination of 12 and 8-hour shifts.

FUNCTION: This position is located in the Occupational Therapy Department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH and SMMH are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i operating nine (9) facilities statewide.

Primary function of the Occupational Therapist III is to provide occupational therapy services at both facilities including performing diagnostic assessments, prepares and implements treatment plans and other therapeutic activities to in-patients, residents and out-patients as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary in conjunction with the Physical Therapy. This position reports directly to the Regional Physical Therapist IV.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements.  Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Applicants for all levels must have a baccalaureate degree in occupational therapy from a school of occupational therapy approved at the time of graduation by the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. in collaboration with the American Medical Association; or in the case of a foreign-trained person, the credentials indicating completion of an occupational therapy education program shall be evaluated and approved by the Certification Committee of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed the field work requirements prescribed by the degree awarding school.

Licensure:

Possession a valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license, Type 3.

Valid and active license with the State of Hawai’i as an Occupational Therapist (OT) must be presented at the time of appointment.

Certifications: In accordance with Chapter 457G of the Hawai’i Revised Statues (HRS), all applicants shall have passed the occupational therapist national certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

Experience: None required.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of: Functional anatomy, kinesiology, neuroanatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, abnormal and educational psychology and related sciences; basic principles, practices and philosophy of occupational therapy; occupational therapy evaluation and testing procedures; current treatment techniques including use and modifications of appropriate therapy equipment and appliances; and methods of instructing clients; and available occupational therapy resources in the community.

Ability to: In addition to the abilities listed under the II level, this class requires the ability to independently apply principles, methods and techniques of occupational therapy; instruct clients and others in the application of the occupational therapy process; and supervise subprofessional occupational therapy personnel.

Under the global oversight of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, the Assistant Director of Nursing organizes, directs, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the activities of the Nursing Department to ensure safe quality care for patients/residents.

As a member of the nursing administrative/management team, works closely with the Regional Chief Nurse Executive on all aspects of planning, organizing, developing, and implementing the provision of health care services.

In an emergency or in the absence of the Regional Chief Nurse Executive, this position assumes the necessary functions and responsibilities of the management of nursing with the exception of procurement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Specialized Experience: Two (2) years of professional nursing work experience in a clinic or hospital environment of which one (1) year must have been comparable to the work of a Nurse Administrator or two (2) years work experience which must have been comparable to the work of a Nurse Manager II or Nurse Supervisor II.

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years as a supervisor of nurses responsible for all patient care and treatment services for a hospital. This experience must have included one (1) year of experience supervising professional as well as sub professional nursing service employees.

Administrative Experience: One (1) year of Administrative Experience in the in organizing, controlling and directing nursing services in a hospital, which involved active participation in and major responsibility for the development, management, execution, and coordination of policies, activities, and programs.

The Registered Professional Nurse III (RPN III) provides professional nursing care within the ED; coordinates care with other disciplines. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with the ED physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Position is subject to shift work and may be assigned to cover other nursing units as needed.

The RPN III works under the general supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse VII: Unit Nurse Manager, or its designee.
