JOB FUNCTION: This position is located in the Acute Psychiatric/Behavioral Health department of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). The Acute Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Unit provides nursing, social work, and ancillary health services to involuntary and voluntary patients with acute and/or chronic psychiatric and behavioral problems. Additionally, this position provides social work support for the entire SMMH facility.
 
The Clinic Receptionist I is responsible for receiving patients for outpatient services, scheduling appointments and procedures, interviewing patients, and other related duties required to support the services for the nursing Psychiatric Unit and some clerical assistance to the Social Services Dept. This position must interface with nursing managers and have the ability to use tact and diplomacy in ensuring that Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards are maintained. High level of confidentiality required. This position may be required to work in other nursing units as assigned and is subject to working all shifts, including weekends and holidays as assigned. The Clinic Receptionist I reports to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Nurse Manager), position number 20782. With regards to clerical social work duties, this position reports to the Social Worker IV, position number 21796.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Health Information Management (HIM) Department provides services in all aspects of records management – including data collection and data quality management, integrity, standards, disclosure, coding, disposition, and privacy of health information. HIM performs detailed analysis of the information in the health record to facilitate health care delivery, patient safety and decision support. HIM plays an integral role in ensuring the confidentiality of health information within the patient record and are advocates of the patient’s right to private, secure, and confidential information.

Knowledge of: administrative functions, principles, procedures, and practices of health information management; fundamentals of medical science; fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; current trends and developments in health information management methods and procedures; pertinent federal, state and local medical record reporting requirements and laws affecting medical care activities; hospital procedures, medical ethics and customs; and uses and limitations of primary and secondary records, indexes and classification systems.

Ability to: supervise and direct the operations of a health information management department; apply principles and practices of health information management; analyze medical data from clinical records; prepare plans, policies, guidelines, standards and procedures relating to health information management activities; ability to provide health information management consultative services; and ability to conduct seminars and training sessions in health information management activities;

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
