FUNCTION: The position of Registered Professional Nurse III (Education/EMR), under the director of the Inservice Education Nurse Manager, assists with the planning, development, training, evaluation, and coordination of inservice education and EMR implementation for the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kauai region personnel.

The Registered Professional Nurse III (Education/EMR) assists the Inservice Education unit develops and initiates orientation programs for new nursing personnel, coordinates, develops, and implements educational programs for on-the-job training and continuing education for all Kauai region personnel.

The Registered Professional Nurse III (Education/EMR) is responsible for ensuring that the age-appropriate healthcare needs of the adult, geriatric, pediatric and newborn population are provided by either coordinating directly, or inservicing employees as mandated by all State and Federal Regulations, Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies.

The Registered Professional Nurse III (Education/EMR) assists with break relieves within the nursing units. May also work weekends and assigned to other units to assist or take assignments in direct patient services, as needed.

Position reports to the Education Nurse Manager (RPN V), position number 20862.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: One half years (1/2) of professional nursing experience where applicant independently provided nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital or institution.

Select Certification: Of the required one half (1/2) year professional nursing experience, six (6) months must be in nursing education and EMR.

Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider.

License Requirement: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii

The Medical/Surgical unit provides individualized age-specific medical/surgical nursing care to patient populace consisting of pediatrics to geriatrics.

The primary function of this position (Head Nurse) is to assume the 24-hour accountability for the management and direction of the Medical/Surgical unit, Nursing Services Section to ensure the provision of optimal care for patients addressing the individualized age-appropriate care needs of patients. Requirements

JOB DUTIES: This position is located in the Health Information Management of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). The Coder III is primarily responsible for performing routine qualitative and quantitative chart analyses to ensure complete physician documentation and indexing, coding assignments for reimbursement purposes, prompt transmittal of patient discharge data to Patient Financial Services Department, ongoing scrutiny of compliance with record completion procedures, release of medical information to third party carriers, release of information to others as dictated by policy and procedures, and other duties as assigned. This position may be required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.

FUNCTION:   The Coder II is primarily responsible for performing routine qualitative and quantitative chart analyses to ensure complete physician documentation and indexing,  coding assignments for reimbursement purposes, prompt transmittal of patient discharge data to Patient Financial Services Department, ongoing scrutiny of compliance with record completion procedures, release of medical information to third party carriers, release of information to others as dictated by policy and procedures, and other duties as assigned. This position works closely with Utilization Review and may be required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.

The experience must have been gained within the last five (5) years.

Certification: Valid CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based) from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) or CPC or CPC-H (Certified Professional Coder – hospital) [outpatient coding] from AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) is required.

Licensure: None required.

Desired skills: Working knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), American Medical Association, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) Coding system, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS); nature and uses of medical records; medical terminology; knowledge of disease processes and pharmacology; established health information management classification, filing and indexing systems; the use of computer equipment and software applications; strong analytical skills and office practices and procedures.
