LOCATIONS: These regional positions are located in the Maintenance department of HHSC Kaua’i Region. Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The Maintenance Department provides technical expertise for the design, planning and construction aspects of building, remodeling, or renovation of the physical plant and equipment to meet the needs of the facility; maintains the buildings and equipment of the facility; repairs or replaces parts of equipment; maintains electrical service; ensures other utilities of the facility are functioning properly; maintains grounds and landscaping; operates and maintains boilers; conducts fire inspection; maintains the facility in a clean, sanitary and attractive condition; as well as provides security services, which ensure a secure environment within and outside the region hospital and facilities for all patients, employees, visitors and physical property.
JOB FUNCTIONS: The Hospital Security Agent is responsible for regularly policing the hospital and premises of HHSC Kaua’i Region as well as enforces pertinent laws, rules, and regulations to protect all patients, employees, visitors, and detect and prevent attempts by persons who violate the law. Other duties include preventing fires, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry; assists staff with unruly visitors and patients; alleviates plant safety and environmental conditions; conducting investigations, maintaining records and logs and preparing incident reports; and any other duties as assigned. This position may be required to work shifts, including weekends, holidays, and travel to and from the regional facilities based on operational needs. The Hospital Security Agent reports directly to the Manager of Security Services (Regional), position no. 109840, or its designee.
Candidates must be available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on hospital/clinic operation needs. Services are provided 24/7.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. Also, please see below the additional requirements according to the specific department. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Licensure: Possession of a valid Hawai’i’s driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Certifications:
- Valid registration as a Guard with the State of Hawai’i Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 160, Session Laws of Hawai’i 2017 at the time of appointment.
- Required to obtain certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (infant, child, and adult) from the American Heart Association and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification within no more than three (3) months of employment.
General Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of security officer experience.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of: law enforcement methods, techniques and procedures pertaining to the protection and security of personnel and property; methods of maintaining law and order within premises patrolled; techniques and procedures involved in a security operation; effective report writing techniques; court procedures and demeanor; proper handling of other related equipment.
Ability to: speak, read, and write English; work independently; learn during the initial orientation period, hospital rules and regulations pertaining to security; law enforcement techniques pertaining to the protection and security of personnel and property; thoroughly understand and carry out oral and written instructions; write clear and concise reports of investigations and incidents within a timely manner; explain to others and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning the protection and security of personnel and property; work effectively under highly stressful conditions, including hostile individuals; communicate effectively and deal with the general public in a firm but tactful and courteous manner; make sound decisions based on accurate appraisal of people and crisis situations; learn and give first aid and CPR procedures; operate a motor vehicle, security systems, and general office equipment; work cooperatively and tactfully with all personnel, patients and visitors; work shifts, including weekends, holidays, and travel between facilities on a regular basis.
